Using circular design principles to design handwoven rugs
The rug collections named Taxidia meaning journeys in Greek, were notably inspired by several individuals’ best travel memories seen through a photograph, when exploring the world. Photos are the best way to "record" a moment.
Using the Cradle2Cradle concept, each rug design is woven with mono-materials for easier recyclability at the end-of-life. As few as possible virgin materials are sourced, therefore surplus yarns from the Danish carpet industry discharged during production are used.
The rugs’ journey in the circular economy continues when used rugs return and are resold as second-hand and in the end taken apart and converted into materials/products serving a different purpose. In this way waste is minimized through the whole supply chain.
Up to 80% of a product’s environmental impact is decided in the design phase, demanding me as a designer to create products that can meet requirements for high-quality, long service life and recyclability.
In the EU 1,6 million ton carpet waste arise each year and less than 3% is recycled.
